Pniel lower Vaal River

South Africa

The Pniel area offers the best  sight fishing for large mouth yellowfish on the Vaal River . Once you have landed your  personal best largemouth you can target the smallmouth that are abundant.

Fish Species

Smallmouth yellowfish (Labeobarbus aeneus)karee8
Fly-fishing for smallmouth yellow fish is exciting and can be very technical. They can be caught on dry flies, nymphs and streamers, making them one of Africa’s premium freshwater fishes to target with a fly.

Largemouth yellowfish (Labeobarbus Kimberleyensis)
Largemouth yellowfish are strong fighters and grow up to 40lbs. They are found close up to structure. The ideal fly rod to target this species is a fast action nine-foot seven-weight rod

The fishing at Pniel starts off early in the morning followed by breakfast. Then back to the river to complete the morning session, targeting whatever species you wish.Lunch is followed by an afternoon session of sight casting to the huge largemouth that will challenge your fishing skills.

All our guides have exceptional river and boat skills to ensure that guests get the best opportunity to target yellow fish. We work with 1x Guide to 2x Anglers per boat. Anglers also have the option to request a boat and guide to themselves.

Trips are usually held over a weekend, but if one can manage to fish during the week or wish to fish for longer that’s not a problem.
